In case you didn’t know, today is Women’s Christmas (Nollaig na mBan), or at least it is in Ireland.  It’s a rural tradition where women got the day off (from being chained to the sink, one presumes).  Bewildered men all across the country, suddenly found themselves responsible for all of the housework, while the women frolicked and enjoyed their one day off.  Women would meet up for tea and treat themselves to what must have been the original ‘girls day out’.  But of course that’s all changed nowadays, what with gender equality and all that (ahem).  Men are equally responsible for the household, so perhaps it’s a bit unfair to claim an entire day for women?  Not on this blog it ain’t!  So if ever there was a day to demand copious cups of tea and the occasional foot rub, along with a slap up meal at the end of the day (and more importantly, cleaning up after said meal) it’s today.  So claim your Irish ancestry and your right to do naff all – all day.

Speaking of January 6th, it’s also the epiphany – the day when the wise men came to see the baby Jesus with gifts of Gold, Frankenstien and Mirrors 🙂  Today is the day when the Spanish traditionally give gifts, so I’d imagine we’re probably entitled to some jewellery today too.  This day just keeps on getting better and better!
