Cross collage - Copy

It’s summer.  You all want a good read.  Something you can really get your teeth into, historical fiction with a modern twist?  I’m only too happy to oblige!  Get your peepers over to Amazon UK and Amazon US where you can download a copy of my novel, The Cross Of Santiago for only 99p/c until June 7th.  It’s got it all – Spanish knights, battles at sea, mystery, family ties, heirlooms and a love story that spans four centuries.

Adopted as a baby, Amanda Morrison knows nothing of her biological family. But when a lawyer reveals that she has been bequeathed a mysterious heirloom from a long lost aunt, she unlocks the door to a distant past and a secret love. Can her past life really be haunting her present and what can she do to put things right?

The Cross Of Santiago is a tale of two women living in different centuries, whose lives seem to be entwined by fate. A perfect read for Outlander fans.

But don’t just take my word for it!  Readers have left the following reviews….

Very good read and also an interesting change of times

An epic romance across the centuries!  This book has two settings and I loved both.
If you know nothing about the Spanish Armada and how so many of the ships were shipwrecked on the coast of Ireland and Scotland; then worry not, this book will fill you in. I had forgotten so much of this part of history that it was fantastic to revisit it and I ended up having great discussions about the battle and their mission with my husband who is a history fiend.

This book has a lot of mystery. I was adopted and so I can relate to Amanda as a character. She wants to know about her past, about her birth family, and her family’s history. I have been there and so this book was a good read for me because I could REALLY relate to her. I think books that the reader can relate too are the best kind. They help you feel that the story is more REAL, rather than it just being a story that is being read.

The historical parts based around the Spanish Armada seem particularly well researched and it was interesting to hear the story of the Armada crashing around the coast of Ireland. The characters all feel fleshed out and interesting enough to want to read about and the story doesn’t get bogged down by too much history, there is a nice balance.

To celebrate the publication of my first novel, ‘The Cross Of Santiago‘ in paperback, I’m running a giveaway on Goodreads, where you can enter for your chance to win a signed copy.

The idea for this book came to me many years ago, while watching Oprah (bear with me!).  She was interviewing a psychotherapist by the name of Dr. Brian L Weiss, who had just published his book, ‘Many Lives, Many Masters’.  It documented his experience of treating a patient with hypnotherapy and, rather by accident, stumbled across past-life traumas that were causing her emotional distress in this life.  All a bit far-fetched, but you know Oprah, by the end of that hour I was bound for my local library and got a copy of the book.  It was a pretty incredible story, but the evidence-based approach of Dr. Weiss was very convincing and it got my mind racing with ideas for a novel.  What if reincarnation does exist and we carry the memories of our past lives deep within us, waiting to be unlocked?

And that is how my story began.  History was always one of my favourite subjects in school, and I took to my research with gusto.  I knew that I wanted to set my novel in medieval times and Ireland had no shortage of dramatic events during this tumultuous period.  But for me, the most compelling story was that of the Spanish Armada, who crashed upon our Western shores during the most violent storm in history.  Following an indecisive battle with the Royal Navy, marred by misfortune and bad luck, the Armada decided to retreat to Spain and set a course to round the tip of Scotland and south along the Irish Coast.  Even today, the sea is offering up clues and artifacts belonging to great Spanish galleasses , washing cannons and cannon shot up on the beaches of Sligo.  The Ulster Museum houses the entire treasure of La Girona, a ship that sunk off the coast of County Antrim, which also features in my novel.

Past life therapy and medieval warfare were two major themes to cover in a debut novel, but I relished the challenge of writing a ‘Time-Slip’ novel that showed the impact of the past on our present lives.  Being a huge fan of authors like Kate Mosse and Diana Gabaldon, I enjoyed the intertwining story-lines, the parallel lives and the different time periods that make the genre so intriguing.  The first section of the novel introduces us to Amanda Morrison, a young woman whose parents died in a car crash when she was just a baby.  Growing up in her adoptive family, she has always felt loved and secure, but somehow apart.  Then one day, she receives an heirloom from a distant blood relative, whom she has never met, and her search for the truth about her family’s past begins.

If you are a fan of Historical Fiction, Time-Slip or Irish Fiction, why not enter for your chance to win, or download the eBook on Amazon for just 99c/99p until the end of August, as part of my Kindle Countdown Deal.

REVIEWS for The Cross Of Santiago

Four star review for The Cross of Santiago from Trish at Between My Lines here.

Overall, this book has a little bit of everything; an epic romance, adventure, great locations, well researched historical fiction and some dream interpretation.   The mixture of the two stories leads to a snappy, well paced story that kept me excited and invested in the plot.

“The Cross of Santiago” is an intelligent and well written historical romance book. I love historical fiction with a bit of romantic story-line thrown in and this book sure fits the bill. The beginning looked promising and what followed didn’t disappoint.

The Cross of Santiago is a heart-warming, astonishing novel of love and destiny.

I read this novel over a rainy weekend and lost myself completely in it’s charming story, which was full of twists and turns.

Mira’s enchanting review on Forever Book Lover here.

It’s clear the author knows a lot about the time period, and she managed to change the setting to make the reader really feel like they went back in time.

The characters and plot were complex and intriguing enough to capture, and hold, my attention.

Amazon reviews for The Cross Of Santiago can be found here.

As a debut novel it is praiseworthy and as historical fiction goes, I would have to compare it with others I’ve read in the genre such as Diana Gabaldon, Ken Follet and Kate Mosse. All in all, a great read if you’re into romance and adventure with some informative history to boot, The Cross Of Santiago comes highly recommended.

Evie recreated the city perfectly, making me think I was there. The adventures in this book made me stay put and read it all in a heart beat!

I have never read a story like The Cross of Santiago and Evie Gaughan’s attention to detail is amazing, particularly when writing about the historical part of the story.  Readers of historical romance will be hooked on Amanda and Xavier’s story.

Evie Gaughan also has a good sense of humor that shows through her characters.  A good portion of The Cross of Santiago takes place in the 1500′s so if you like historical fiction, you’ll like this book. But that’s not all…it has adventure, romance, and humor.

St Patrick’s Camino

crossbanner-sale  It’s the eve of Saint Patrick’s Day and I’m celebrating with an eBook sale, which you can see very subtly advertised in green!

The title of my novel, ‘The Cross Of Santiago‘, of course comes from the beautiful city of Santiago in Northern Spain.  The ‘Camino de Santiago’ (or the way of St. James) has been a very important pilgrimage route in Europe since the middle ages and is as popular today with walking pilgrims as it ever was.  It is said that the remains of the apostle Saint James were discovered near there and are now enshrined in Santiago’s great cathedral.

To mark Saint Patrick’s Day in Ireland this year, two entrepreneurs are starting the ‘Saint Patrick’s Camino’, Ireland’s answer to El Camino in Spain.

The self-guided walking trail takes in the Mourne Mountains from Faughart, Co Louth (the birthplace of St Brigid) to Downpatrick, Co Down (where she is buried alongside St Patrick). The route will eventually stretch from Downpatrick to Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo.

I think it’s a fantastic idea, and something I really hope to do myself at some point.  Granted, the weather might leave a lot to be desired, but we have so much history on our Ireland – on both sides of the border – that are just waiting to be discovered.
